It looks like a decision on Gary Ross directing Catching Fire may come this week. The Hunger Games director will meet with Lionsgate today – and that’s not all we’re learning.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that one of the main issues holding up Ross is the tight production schedule:

…sources say the filmmaker is concerned about an ambitious production schedule that would require shooting to begin in August so that star Jennifer Lawrence can complete her work before she is due to start filming a sequel to Fox’s X-Men: First Class in January.

THR reported last week that Fox has informed studios and talent agencies of its planned start date for the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men movie. Since Fox’s deal with Lawrence predates her contract for Hunger Games, X-Men is in a priority position. With the script for the second Hunger Games not yet locked, that means all preparations for a sequel would have to be done in four months—a tough schedule to meet.

This wouldn’t be the first time a director left due to time constraints. A recent example: Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke left the franchise after she wasn’t happy with the production schedule Summit wanted on New Moon.

THR also notes that Ross wants a raise after the runaway success of the first movie.

If Ross doesn’t return, who should replace him? We recently posed the question to entertainment writers around the web.
