Gary Oldman stars as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, and the transformation is unreal.

The movie chronicles Churchill’s early days as Prime Minister of Britain during World War II.

Immediately, Churchill’s challenge is clear: Nazi Forces are sweeping Europe, and he emerges as a figure of strength and a symbol of freedom in a broken world.

Now, “with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.”

Here’s the first-look image of Gary Oldman as Churchill, released by Focus Features and Working Title Films. The resemblance is uncanny:

Fellow Harry Potter alum John Hurt stars as Neville Chamberlain, with Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill’s wife, Lily James as his personal secretary and Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI.

Darkest Hour is set to premiere on November 24, 2017 in the U.S. and on December 29, 2017 in the U.K.

Gary Oldman is only the latest in a long line of actors to play Winston Churchill on the big and small screen. His fellow Marauder Timothy Spall portrayed the iconic figure in The King’s Speech, Bob Hoskins took on the challenge in The Man Who Never Was, and Rod Taylor recently took a turn in Inglourious Basterds.

John Lithgow currently stars as Winston Churchill in Netflix’s brand new period drama The Crown, which is available to stream now. Read our review!
