Hear George R.R. Martin read an iconic A Song of Ice and Fire passage in a new promo for the Game of Thrones season 2 DVD box set!

Martin’s voice recites the Night’s Watch Oath which Jon, Sam and the other new recruits had to say when they took the Black in the first novel of the saga, A Game of Thrones, while clips from the second season are shown. And at the end of the trailer, “My Watch Begins.” Wait, did Martin just take the oath for real? One can only speculate.

From a story standpoint, the clips they’ve chosen for the promo are also worth noting, considering they’ve chosen different characters to represent the various parts of the passage. This makes Daenerys the sword in the darkness, Jon the watcher on the Wall, and Tyrion the shield that guards the realms of men. That is eerily accurate, and we wonder how much say Martin himself had in regards to the placement of these clips.

Note that Martin isn’t the only one who has recited this oath. Hypable’s Game of Thrones podcast Game of Owns has also done their own rendition – it doesn’t overlay a trailer (…yet), but you can hear it during the podcast episode “An Abundance of Wine.”

The second season of Game of Thrones will release on DVD/Blu-ray on February 19. Will you be picking up a copy?
