Something spoilerific is going down on the Game of Thrones season 8 set, revealing a major development in the final season.

Warning: Major Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers ahead! Proceed with caution!

If you’re still with us, then here’s the deal. Our ever-vigilant friends at Watchers on the Wall have been keeping an eagle eye on the Winterfell set being used for the final season of Game of Thrones. Filming is under way, and while the production is certainly keeping a tight lid on every possible detail, this particular story development is… well… difficult to hide.

Why? Oh, because Winterfell is burned to freakin’ ground.

Don’t believe us? Watchers on the Wall has video, and there’s also this blurry-but-unmistakable shot of the conflagration.

No amount of HBO money is going to be able to hide THAT. There’s no doubt: After eight seasons of abandonment, conquest, neglect, and recapture, the Stark seat of Winterfell falls.

But who does it fall to? Is the fire wrought by the Night King and the dead dragon Viserion? Is it a fit of pique on Daenerys’ part? Is it just really cold now that winter has come, and one of the servants got too enthusiastic with the heating system?

And perhaps more importantly, the burning of Winterfell begs the question: Will there be any casualties? As of the conclusion to Game of Thrones season 7, Winterfell is home to Sansa, Arya, and Bran Stark, with Jon and Dany on their way back to the castle. Will the loss of Winterfell mean the loss of any (or all??) of the remaining Starks?

At this point, it’s impossible to tell. But with Game of Thrones season 8 gearing up to a finale as epic as the series that birthed it, we won’t rest easy until the embers of this fire go cold.

Game of Thrones season 8 will air in 2019 on HBO.
