Game of Thrones season 8 is officially coming — but not for a while.

HBO announced today that Game of Thrones season 8 will return in 2019. A more specific time-frame has yet to be released for the final season — so here’s hoping it’s earlier, rather than later!

Game of Thrones season 8 will consist of six episodes, which are each rumored to run significantly longer than the standard 50-odd minutes. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will write, produce, and direct the final season, and will be joined in the writer’s room by Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill. A list of familiar and accomplished names fills out the list of directors.

George R.R. Martin, author of the Song of Ice and Fire novels, will not write an episode for Game of Thrones season 8. There is also no indication that the long-awaited sixth novel, The Winds of Winter, will be completed this year.

However, there may be some new Game of Thrones content in 2018. Martin has suggested that the first volume of his Targaryen history Fire and Blood may be released this year.

(You know. Maybe.)

But even as the final season of Game of Thrones comes to a close, fans have more to look forward to in the coming years. Five Game of Thrones spinoffs are in the works at HBO, with George R.R. Martin consulting on several of the new projects. The most promising, spearheaded by Bryan Cogman, is almost certain to entertain fans well beyond 2019.

Game of Thrones season 8 will air in 2019 on HBO.
