The dead are coming (and Jon is still dead) as mysticism and violence explode in a new Game of Thrones season 6 trailer.

Wars of ice and wars of fire are being waged the world over in the new trailer, which focuses on both characters and the larger conflicts in which they are swallowed. From Ser Davos, taking up Jon Snow’s fallen flag at the Wall to Daenerys’ worst vacation ever among the Dothraki, violence and brutality permeates practically every shot.

Set to a guttural beat, the new Game of Thrones season 6 trailer offers ominous soundbites from most of the central players; suffice to say, only Tyrion has any sense of humor left by this point. (And that’s probably because he’s drunk.)

At first, it is the human element of Game of Thrones season 6 that takes center stage. Jaime shrugs off the High Sparrow’s warnings, Jaqen H’oever-he-is tells Arya that she has won an (apparently brutal) second chance, and Sansa reflects on her status as series scapegoat.

Meanwhile, danger is clearly just heartbeats away for other characters, like Margaery and Loras Tyrell and Balon Greyjoy whoever happens to be standing on that very unsafe-looking bridge. Cersei lusts for blood as she tells Tommen to “Show them what Lannisters are — what we do to our enemies,” but one can’t help but think that the Lannisters’ days in power may be numbered.

Following an overwhelming number of battle scenes (at Winterfell, in Meereen, among the Dothraki) the Game of Thrones season 6 trailer shifts its attention to the mystical. All this conflict, the trailer suggests, may be a mere distraction.

“The real war is between the living and the dead,” Davos proclaims. “And make no mistake — the dead are coming.”

Indeed they are, as the Night’s King and his White Walkers advance with terrifying alacrity. And to balance the brutality of ice, Tyrion Lannister steps into the magical inferno of Dany’s dragons… with potentially crispy results.

The still photos and first trailer whet our appetite for the upcoming season, but this newest installment pushes us past fun and games. We want Game of Thrones season 6 in our faces: Now, please.

The Game of Thrones season 6 premiere, “The Red Woman,” airs Sunday, April 24 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
