Legendary actor Max von Sydow is joining Game of Thrones season 6, and unlike another recent casting, we know exactly who he’ll play.

Sydow has joined the sixth run of HBO’s Game of Thrones as the Three-Eyed Raven, a character who last appeared in the season 4 finale and was played by a different actor (Struan Rodger).

The character was lurking in the shadows during the first and third seasons.

Von Sydow is best known for roles in films like 2002’s Minority Report and 1973’s The Exorcist, but he’ll also be appearing in this December’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens in a yet-to-be-revealed role.

Needless to say, the 86-year-old actor is having a great year.

Despite casting a big actor for the part, EW warns that Van Sydow is “not expected to have a lot of screen time” in season 6, but says his role is “crucial.” Given the enormity of the actor, we have to assume that this arc will also offer viewers memorable scenes.

Perhaps this is a sign as to what lies ahead in George R.R. Martin’s Winds of Winter?

Over the weekend we learned that Ian McShane has also joined the new season of Game of Thrones in a mystery role.

The new season is expected to premiere next spring on HBO. Filming, like speculation over Jon Snow’s presence in season 6, is currently underway.
