About that ‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 trailer…

This trailer premiered last night exclusively in IMAX theaters last night and will continue to run through February 5.

So many glimpses of what’s to come: Tommen and Margaery’s wedding, Dany’s new plan (“I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel.”), Arya going to the House of Black and White, Jorah in the fighting pits — and perhaps most excitingly, our first proper looks at Braavos and Dorne.

Sansa and Littlefinger are seen embracing, with him telling her, “There is no justice in this world. Not unless we make it. Avenge them.” What is the unlikely pair plotting?

Then there’s Varys and Tyrion, who appear to be looking for a new ruler of Westeros: a person Varys describes as “a ruler loved by all with a powerful army and the right family name.”

“Good luck finding him,” Tyrion scoffs. “Who said anything about him?” asks Varys. Do you think they’re planning to join Team Daenerys?

The song playing in the trailer is a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” Thanks to our reader Ryan for tracking down the cover version, by TV on the Radio!

Old characters! New characters! Sword fights and fires, sand snakes and screaming! Oh my!

We’ll give you a moment to collect yourself.

The highly-anticipated trailer for HBO’s epic fantasy series was initially released in IMAX theaters this week. The preview is screening after a special release of the final two episodes of Game of Thrones season 4, “The Watchers on the Wall,” and, “The Children.” Appropriately for the massive, record-breaking series, these episodes make Game of Thrones the first television series ever to be screened in the IMAX format.

As anticipated, the immersive experience of IMAX has proven to be an ideal stage for the intrigue and awesomeness of Game of Thrones. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were recently treated to a private screening of “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children,” and were blown away by the new format.

“It’s a completely different viewing experience,” said Weiss.

“I’ve watched these episodes hundreds of times,” Benioff added, but IMAX presented details “I’d just never noticed before.”

“I’m still kind of in shock,” Weiss agreed.

Benioff and Weiss’ enthusiasm is infectious, leaving us hungry to experience the IMAX format — and positively clamoring to see Game of Thrones season 5.

Fans will have to wait for April for the fifth season, but can still purchase tickets to see Game of Thrones in IMAX. The special presentation is screening at 150 theaters around the country. But act fast! The episodes, and the chance to see the Game of Thrones season 5 trailer in its tremendous glory are only sticking around for a week.

Game of Thrones season 5 will premiere on Sunday, April 12 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
