HBO has released the synopses for episodes 9 and 10 of Game of Thrones season 5, as well as ominous still photos from this week’s episode.

According to the network, the ninth episode the season will air on June 7 and be titled “The Dance of Dragons” — a name distinctly familiar to book readers.

“Stannis confronts a troubling decision,” HBO says of the episode, and “Jon returns to The Wall.” In Braavos, “Mace visits the Iron Bank. Arya encounters someone from her past.” And in Meereen, the dragons may come out to dance in truth as “Dany reluctantly oversees a traditional celebration of athleticism.”

Only HBO could make the bloody battles to the death in Meereen’s fighting pits sound like the winter Olympics.

The ninth episode of every season of Game of Thrones has reliably been the stage for the most shocking and epic events of the year — and presumably, this time around will be no exception. But hey, after five seasons, what could possibly traumatize us hardened Game of Thrones fans?

(Answer: Stannis burning Shireen. Don’t do it, Stannis. Do. Not. Do. It.)

Titled “Mother’s Mercy,” the Game of Thrones season 5 finale will pick up where these troubling possibilities leave off — though HBO is oblique on the details.

“Stannis marches,” the network says, while “Dany is surrounded by strangers.” Meanwhile, “Cersei seeks forgiveness,” and “Jon is challenged.”

Well… Jon can handle a challenge… right?

Interestingly, these synopses offer no reference to Sansa’s plight in Winterfell, or Jaime’s strange adventures down in Dorne. But hey, they’re probably all fine.

The final two episode of Game of Thrones season 5 are written by showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and directed by David Nutter — the same Nutter who directed the unforgettable final two episodes of season 3.

But lest we get too mindful of the Red Wedding, HBO has released new stills from Game of Thrones season 5, episode 8, airing this Sunday. Titled “Hardhome,” the episode will largely focus on Jon’s mission to rescue the wilding women and children; meanwhile, Dany and Tyrion will begin sizing each other up.

Game of Thrones season 5, episode 8, “Hardhome,” airs on Sunday, May 31 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
