Still photos from the upcoming Game of Thrones season 5 finale suggest that the epic fantasy series still has a few punches left to throw.

The stills touch on most of the major conflicts left to play out in the Game of Thrones season 5 finale, titled “Mother’s Mercy.” According to the HBO synopsis, Sunday’s episode will focus on changes for many pivotal characters.

“Stannis marches,” the network says, while “Dany is surrounded by strangers.” Meanwhile, “Cersei seeks forgiveness,” and “Jon is challenged.”

Jon definitely has the look of a man challenged in one of the new images, while Sam looks quite worried. Though to be fair, that state of affairs is pretty status-quo for both the Lord Commander and his constant companion, so it’s probably nothing to worry about.

The only happy-looking people in this entire set of stills are Stannis and Melisandre, who appear rosy and cozy after murdering Shireen. Hey, burning children alive is strenuous work, and the would-be king and his sexy sorceress totally deserve to bask in the glow of their accomplishment.

It’s not like we hope Ramsay Bolton spends a year peeling their skin from their bodies and then rubbing lye into the meat, or anything like that.

Speaking, unfortunately, of Ramsay Bolton, Sansa Stark is the focus of her own image from the Game of Thrones season 5 finale. The expression on her face is hard to read out of context – we’d believe anything from hope unlooked-for to catastrophic horror – but we can’t abandon the dream that something good might finally happen to the long-suffering Sansa.

As for the other remaining Starks, Arya does not appear in the stills for “Mother’s Mercy.” This is something of a surprise, given the choice Arya must make between her new life as a budding assassin and the chance to murder Meryn Trant.

Arya’s mentor Jaqen H’ghar does appear in the still however, and he doesn’t look all that pleased – perhaps he has learned of Arya’s choice?

The images also do not offer any hints about Dany’s whereabouts, though the synopsis does suggest that she hasn’t fallen off Drogon’s back and unceremoniously died. (We’ll take our wins where can get them.) We do get a glimpse of Tyrion, Jorah, and Daario, though; having apparently escaped unscathed from Daznak’s Pit, Dany’s main men appear to just be sitting around in a funk, waiting for their queen to return.

We’d wonder where Missandei is, but she’s probably off actually getting stuff done.

Finally, Cersei Lannister is the focus of two photos from the Game of Thrones season 5 finale. It almost seems like the spiteful and stupendous Queen Mother has capitulated to the Faith’s demands in these stills – but has Cersei really been defeated, or is she playing yet another game from within her confessional prison?

The preview for “Mother’s Mercy” offers slightly more context for these images, but preserves just as many mysteries. Brienne finally makes a reappearance, but there is no sign of further developments in Dorne, or how the Tyrells might be dealing with the High Sparrow’s inquisition.

And just to leave us off on a really cheerful note, Sansa’s talking about death! Ah, Game of Thrones.

The Game of Thrones season 5 finale, “Mother’s Mercy,” will air on Sunday, June 14 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
