That actor divulges his feelings on that scene — and whether or not there’s a future for his character.

The Game of Thrones season 5 finale was literally littered with corpses and cliffhangers, but fans are most desperate to know whether or not Jon Snow really met his absolute, 100%, dead-is-dead death on “Mother’s Mercy.”

The answer, according to actor Kit Harington, appears to be “Yes.”

“I had a sit-down with Dan and David, we did the Tony Soprano walk,” Harington says. “And they said, ‘Look, you’re gone, it’s done.'”

Harington says that this incident is one of the few times he was let in on the grander plan for Game of Thrones — and that any afterlife for Jon Snow will be just as much of a surprise to him as it is to the fans.

“I have never been told the future of things in this show, but this is the one time I have,” he says. “They sat me down and said, ‘This is how it is.’ If anything in the future is not like that, then I don’t know about it – it’s only in David and Dan and George’s heads.”

“But I’ve been told I’m dead,” Harington says definitively. “I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season.”

The crew involved in the Game of Thrones season 5 finale seems to agree.

“Jon Snow is dead,” says director David Nutter. And showrunner Dan Weiss was equally blunt.

“Dead is dead,” Weiss says. “We would hope that after seeing the scene and the way it’s shot that the answer to that will be unambiguous in the minds of the people watching it. It should be pretty clear what happens in by the time you’re done seeing that scene.”

For his part, Harington says that he wasn’t entirely surprised by this turn of events. According to the actor, he had heard rumors of the Night’s Watch coup — which serves as a shocking punctuation on George R.R. Martin’s A Dance With Dragons.

“I had an inkling it should be this season,” he admits, but “I didn’t realize it would be final shot of the season and that made it extra special. It’s always kind of nice really when you’re the last thing that happens in that episode.”

Harington also has no regrets from a story perspective.

“I loved it,” he says. I loved how they brought Olly in to be the person who kills me. I love how the storyline with Thorne was wrapped up. I think it was really well crafted by [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss]. It felt like the right way for it to happen.”

Though Harington feels badly for Jon’s early death, he says that it is in keeping with the tone and ethos of the epic fantasy series.

“[Game of Thrones] treats drama as real life,” he observes. “And people die and don’t accomplish what we think they’re meant to in real life. And I think that’s one of the powerful things about Thrones.”

Harington, who says that he was “more emotional than I thought I’d be” on his last day on set, says that his major regret comes from the major thematic mystery thrumming at the heart of Game of Thrones.

“The major loss with Jon’s through-line is he never finds out who his mother is,” Harington says. “And that’s the heartbreaking thing for me.”
