Game of Thrones finally returns to our screens tonight, but what are you hoping for from season 5?

Game of Thrones is probably the most exciting show on television, full stop. In fact, it’s so epic and exciting that the 10 months of the year in which it’s not on the air feel a little flat and boring. But the 10 month Westeros drought is over, and Game of Thrones is back! Fans worldwide are waiting with bated breath to see what the future holds for Tyrion, Daenerys, Arya, Sansa, Stannis, Jon, and the rest of the exhaustive cast list.

To celebrate its return, we’ve made a list of six things we want from the new season – including character returns, plot progression, and other things we’re hoping to see over the next couple of months. Game of Thrones is back! Long live Game of Thrones!

More from the White Walkers

The White Walkers had an unexpected stint in season 4, which saw them take Craster’s last child to their creepy ice lair. However, instead of eating the child like we’d suspected they do since season 2, we saw the baby converted into a scary demon baby. We’re hoping we get a further glimpse into their mysterious mythology in season 5, as after four years of teasers and hints, it would be great to get an idea of what they’re about and what they want from Westeros. Death and destruction, we’re presuming. But why?

Bad Ass Sansa

Sansa has spent most of Game of Thrones‘s length as a fragile and scared “little bird”, but her escape from King’s Landing gave her a chance to assert herself and grow into a strong woman in her own right. We saw the beginning of this towards the end of season 4 – after watching her murderous Aunt Lysa thrown from the moon door, Sansa got a bad ass new black look. We’re hoping season 5 will give us a devil may care personality to go with the makeover.

Don’t break the wheel – use it!

In the trailers for season 5, Daenerys delivers the line that gets Game of Thrones fan’s blood pumping. “I’m not going to stop the wheel,” she declares. “I’m going to break it.” It’s a great soundbite to sell the new season, but we’re hoping she spends less time breaking wheels and more time using them in the episodes ahead. It looks like we’ll see more of Dany’s ruling struggles this season, and that’s an interesting plot development. But she’s been waiting to get to mainland Westeros since the first episode of the show, so it would be nice to see the Mother of Dragons get a little closer to her goal.

Good times for the good guys

The odds were finally evened a little in season 4. After three years of Stark killing, the show finally disposed of the demented Joffery, as well as his grandfather and Lannister chess-master, Tywin. But that didn’t mean the good guys had an easy time. Tyrion was on trial for treason, Jon and Sam had an army of Wildlings to fight, Sansa was nearly thrown to her death, and the harsh world around her started to consume Arya. With all of these characters seemingly heading in a new direction, we hope there’s more luck for the protagonists of the show this year. Even if it is just a calm before the storm.

An exciting cliffhanger

The cliffhangers for season 1 and 2 of Game of Thrones had us and our friends screaming for more. Who could forget the moment Daenerys rose from the ashes with three baby dragons, or when Sam had a whole army of subzero zombies walk past him. Those jaw-dropping moments have been missing for the last two years, and it would be nice to see them return with season 5. Whether it’s the White Walkers finally attacking, Dany touching down in Westeros, or something new entirely, we’d like a jaw-dropping finale this year.
