As rumoured, Game of Thrones season 4 will indeed see director Neil Marshall return – but not to direct the finale episode.

Variety reports (via Empire Magazine) that Neil Marshall, director of the epic season 2 episode “Blackwater,” will return in Game of Thrones season 4 to direct the second to last episode.

Marshall’s return to Game of Thrones has been rumoured for a while, but it was believed that he would be directing the season 4 finale.

Usually in television series, you’d expect the season finale to pack the big punch, but as Game of Thrones fans know, episode 9 is where it’s at.

In season 1, episode 9 “Baelor,” Ned Stark lost his head. In season 2, episode 9 “Blackwater,” the huge Battle of Blackwater happened, raining green fire down on Stannis’ fleet while Tyrion commanded an army on the shore.

And in season 3, episode 9, “The Rains of Castamere,” both Robb Stark and his mother Catelyn were killed off in Tywin Lannister and Walder Frey’s twisted scheme. (And let’s not forget the unsung victims Talisa, Grey Wind and Baby Ned!)

That’s a lot to live up to. And who knows what Game of Thrones season 4, episode 9 will bring?!

Well, some people know. As the season roughly follows the plot of the third novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga, A Storm of Swords, book readers may have an idea of what’s happening.

But even we can’t predict what twists the HBO series might add to the story, so don’t be too sure you know what’s coming.
