HBO has released several great stills from Game of Thrones season 4 as the show inches closer to its April debut.

We’ve created a full-size post so you can appreciate each photo in all of its glory (scroll down!). Actors who appear in the stills include Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Natalie Dormer, Emilia Clarke, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Judging by the lush images, most of the characters seem to be kicking off Game of Thrones season 4 in a decidedly unhappy mode. (Maybe they’ve realized that their story is being written by George R.R. Martin.) The newly reunited Jaime and Cersei look like they are anything but lost in conjugal bliss, while Sansa, Tyrion look more understandably miserable. Jon Snow, meanwhile, looks like someone took away his favorite toy; given that he and the visibly-grim Ygritte separated on terrible terms last season, that impression might not be inaccurate.

The photos also give us our first good look at Michael Huisman, who is replacing Ed Skrein in the role of the dashing sellsword, Daario Noharis. In addition, two new characters can be clearly seen for the first time – Prince Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) and his paramour Elaria Sand (Indira Varma.) The two fiery characters hail from Dorne, the southernmost territory of the Seven Kingdoms, and already look like they’ve had it up to here with life in King’s Landing.

In fact, out of the cast pictured, only King Joffery and his grandfather Tywin Lannister look like they have anything to be pleased about. Given Joffery’s vicious stupidity and Tywin’s brilliant cruelty, we can’t say that this bodes particularly well for the rest of the characters at their mercy.

But then again, this is Game of Thrones; king or councilor, no one is safe.

Next Sunday (not this Sunday), HBO will debut a 15-minute Game of Thrones season 4 featurette which will look at what happened in season 3 and offer new looks into the upcoming episodes.

Game of Thrones premieres Sunday, April 6 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific. If these photos aren’t enough, be sure to check out the trailer.
