The preview and stills from Game of Thrones season 4, episode 2 indicate that joy will soon be mixed with grim tidings.

Game of Thrones season 4, episode 2 will air this Sunday on HBO, and it looks like Joffrey and Margaery will finally be having their day in the sun. The episode, titled “The Lion and the Rose,” appears to focus on the long-awaited royal wedding, which will finally bind the Houses of Lannister and Tyrell with a marriage alliance.

But as this is Game of Thrones, we won’t just be witnessing a wedding this week. The preview for “The Lion and the Rose” makes it clear that the darker side of life is weighing heavily on many characters’ minds.

For starters, not everyone is overwhelmed with joy at seeing Joffrey and Margaery at the height of their happiness. Tyrion and Sansa both seem rather sour at the prospect, and clearly the ever-present tensions within the Lannister family are not going to be eased any time soon.

The preview for Game of Thrones season 4, episode 2 also offers our first glimpse at Bran Stark for the season, struggling to press forward in the lands beyond the Wall. Melisandre also makes her first appearance, engaged in her usual activities of burning stuff and talking about hell.

The still photos from “The Lion and the Rose” tease the lavishness of Joffrey and Margaery’s wedding, and also give us a look at other characters returning in the new season.

The official synopsis for “The Lion and the Rose” coyly suggests family bonding alongside the feuds – and teases the return of Roose Bolton’s utterly-crazypants bastard, Ramsay Snow.

Tyrion lends Jaime a hand. Joffrey and Margaery host a breakfast. At Dragonstone, Stannis loses patience with Davos. Ramsay finds a purpose for his pet. North of the Wall, Bran sees where they must go.

Onward and upward, Bran. Onward and upward.

Game of Thrones season 4, episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose” will air on Sunday, April 13 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
