Watch the Inside the Episode video for Game of Thrones season 3, episode 9 “The Rains of Castamere” to find out what Benioff and Weiss have to say about the Red Wedding.

In the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones season 3, we lost two core characters: Robb and Catelyn Stark.

The Red Wedding is one of the most iconic moments from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga, and the scene which showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have most looked forward to adapting for screen.

Check out the Inside the Episode videos, which show new behind-the-scenes clips from the episode and interviews with Weiss and Benioff:

Weiss explains Robb’s arc in this episode, how ironically he’s learning to put the past behind him and learning to look ahead to the future.

Benioff adds that Robb has realised the mistake he made when he married Talisa (as much as he loved her). “He needs his mom’s council at the moment […] he’s not no stronger ally than his mother,” he says.

They also talk about the tragedy of Arya’s journey, which saw her almost reach her mother and brother only to witness their demise. “She’s gone through so much hell, right from the moment when she saw her father beheaded up until this monent,” Weiss says. “She feels like she finally can dare for something good to happen to her again.”

However, as we know, “She’s within 10 yards of safety, and then it all goes horribly wrong,” Benioff says.

As for the Red Wedding scene itself, “It’s clearly one of the more important events in the entire series,” Benioff acknowledges. “Everything changes after this point. It’s kind of the end of the innocence.”

“It was one of the primary reasons that we wanted to make this show,” Weiss adds. “It’s also completely inevitable in hindsight.”

In the second video, we go into the Red Wedding in even more detail, with clips of filming the pivotal scene:

Finally, just to make everyone feel a little better, check out Arya actress Maisie Williams’ Vine video reaction to the Red Wedding deaths – it might make you cry, but not out of sadness!

They dead. They so dead.
