The Iron Throne may still be contested, but there is now no doubt which of HBO’s brilliant dramas takes the ratings crown.

Move over, Tony Soprano, there’s a usurper on the way! HBO announced yesterday that their now-classic mobster drama The Sopranos has been overthrown from its long held position as the network’s most popular show.

In place of the gritty mobster clan from New Jersey, it is the backstabbing lords and ladies of Westeros (and beyond) who have now earned the top spot on HBO’s most-watched list. According to the network, Game of Thrones now earns an average gross of 18.4 million viewers, a number tallied from live viewing and reruns, as well as viewers catching the epic fantasy drama on DVR and HBO Go.

Obviously, not all of these venues for viewing were available during the initial run of The Sopranos. The critically acclaimed mobster drama earned an average gross audience of 18.2 million viewers across its six-season tenure.

But as anyone familiar with the internet will know, the average gross viewership for Game of Thrones is likely much higher than gleaned from official sources. The tale of intrigue, incest, and dragons is one of the most pirated television shows airing today.

Though most of the cast and crew of Game of Thrones have offered little comment on the epic achievement, author George R.R. Martin did chime in on the news. Martin, an executive producer on the show, and author of the Song of Ice and Fire series on which Game of Thrones is based penned a celebratory post for his “Not a Blog.”

Game of Thrones rules!” the author wrote. “I loved The Sopranos. But I gotta admit, it’s good to be the king.”

Game of Thrones season 4, episode 9, “The Watchers on the Wall,” will air on Sunday, June 8 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
