The Game of Thrones series finale may have left fans with some questions as to what comes next, but HBO isn’t chomping at the bit to explore what the future holds for certain characters.

WARNING: Spoilers for the final episode ahead!

There’s no denying fans who tuned into the Game of Thrones series finale were left with some questions unanswered and, more importantly, left curious to know what comes next for certain characters, such as Arya.

The last time we saw the youngest Stark sister, she was setting off to discover what exactly lay west of Westeros.

The open ended nature of Arya’s final scene seems as though it would be the perfect opportunity for HBO to swoop in and green light a spinoff sequel following her adventures.

Unfortunately, fans crossing their fingers for such a series might not want to hold their breath.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter just days after Game of Thrones aired its final episode, HBO programming president Casey Bloys shot down the possibility of greenlighting direct sequels.

“Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David’s show — to be its own thing. I don’t want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them into another world with someone else creating it,” explained Bloys. “George [R.R. Martin] has a massive world; there are so many ways in. That’s why we’re trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and re-do the same show. That’s probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn’t make sense for us.”

So what comes next? As we’ve known for quite some time, HBO’s current plan is to continue exploring Martin’s world with prequels.

In fact, as it stands, HBO already has three Game of Thrones prequels currently in the works — the first of which, according to Bloys, is gearing up to start shooting very soon.

“We’re shooting the pilot in June, you can do the math and figure out when it would be on the air,” teased Bloys.

HBO is fairly adamant about not wanting the forthcoming prequel to feel rushed to make its way on to the small screen. With that in mind, there’s currently no word on any sort of time frame with regards to when we can expect it to premiere.
