A new interview with Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau teases Jaime Lannister’s role in the season 3 finale, and his relationship with Brienne.

This Sunday, season 3 of Game of Thrones comes to an end. While the Lannisters have not suffered nearly as much as the Starks this year, we think Jaime’s journey has been one of the most heart-wrenching to watch.

Speaking to EW, Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau talks about the finale episode “Mhysa,” revealing that, “You want some kind of closure, and I think the writers did a really good job giving that.”

“There is a sense of coming to the end of a chapter,” he says, “but at the same time, you also want to set up the next season, and they set up the next season in a pretty spectacular way.”

The relationship between Jaime and Brienne is a favourite among fans, and Coster-Waldau teases that the finale will also see a bit of closure to their journey.

Most of his scenes this year have been with Gwendoline Christie (Brienne), and Coster-Waldau has nothing but praise for the actress. In fact, he is so enthusiastic, he calls her up during the interview.

I’m calling her now. I have another phone here. [To Christie on that line] Are you eating?… Well, can you finish eating for god’s sake, you need to talk to me now. [Laughs] How is the meal?… I am. [Laughs]

Looking back on his favourite scenes to film during season 3, Coster-Waldau points to the stunts he and Christie did with the live bear – who turned out to be a huge diva! Who knew?

“He wouldn’t leave his trailer without an applause,” Coster-Waldau says. “I’m not even kidding. The whole crew had to applaud and go, ‘Yeaaaaaah, Bart! Come on, Bart! You’re the best!’ But I gotta give Bart credit. He delivered. He put in a great performance.”

The final episode of Game of Thrones season 3, titled “Mhysa,” airs Sunday at 9/8c on HBO.
