Natalie Dormer of The Tudors and Game of Thrones fame will be stepping into the modern world on CBS’ Sherlock Holmes adaptation series Elementary.

CBS has announced that Natalie Dormer, who currently plays Margaery Tyrell on HBO’s Game of Thrones, will guest star on Elementary later this season as one of the most famous characters from the Arthur Conan Doyle novels: Irene Adler, Sherlock Holmes’ former love interest.

Executive producer Rob Doherty has spoken about the casting choice, saying, “Irene Adler is perhaps the most pivotal relationship in Sherlock’s life, and I can’t think of an actress better suited to the challenge than Natalie.”

Dormer will be appearing in the three final episodes of the season, beginning with the May 9 episode and finishing out her arc in the following week’s two-hour season finale (airing May 16).

It was revealed earlier this year that Irene has died and that Moriarty was responsible, so it looks like we might be meeting her in a string of flashbacks showing how these events transpired.

Unless, of course, it turns out that Irene is still alive? This would certainly throw a wrench into the Sherlock/Watson dynamic, and would allow Dormer to come back for a longer arc in season 2.

Are you looking forward to seeing Natalie Dormer as Irene Adler? Will she do as good a job as Sherlock‘s Lara Pulver and the Sherlock Holmes movies’ Rachel McAdams?
