Game of Thrones season 3, episode 9 saw a huge development for the Starks. Read what Michelle Fairley (Catelyn) has to say about what happened.

In “The Rains of Castamere,” we lost not only Robb Stark but his mother as well.

Catelyn watched her son and his wife die, and then had her own throat slit in Walder Frey’s throne room, at the infamous Red Wedding, which book fans have been anticipating ever since HBO’s Game of Thrones series premiered three years ago!

Michelle Fairley is understandably upset about her character’s demise, but she also acknowledges how powerful a scene it was to play.

“For an actor to be given that part to play, you want to grab it and go straight into it,” she tells reporters in a press call. “I loved it, absolutely. It was my favorite bit of filming in whole series.”

Fairley also talks about Cat’s feelings as she watched the events unfold. “Once Robb is dying, Catelyn’s convinced that none of her children are alive, so what else has she got to live for?” she asks.

“She has nothing. Everybody that she loves and cares for has died. So she then slits Walder Frey’s wife’s throat, and by that action, she knows she’s signing her own death warrant.”

On why Catelyn went through with killing Walder’s young wife, she says, “She knows she’s dead, but in her mind she wants to be dead and wants to get revenge as well.”

“She comes from a very honorable family,” Fairley explains. “Her whole life has been about honor and doing the right thing. [But now] here’s nothing left for her, she’s dead already, she wants it. She wants retribution for her son’s death.”

Now that Catelyn is dead, Fairley reflects on playing the character for the past three years. “I’ve completely fallen in love with the character,” she says. “She is infuriating sometimes [laughs] because she is so honorable. And she does constantly do the right thing. But she’s a driven woman. She’s strong. And that’s what I love about her.”

After they wrapped filming of the wedding, Fairley explains that she had her hair cut and got on a plane, heading home.

Presumably this means that the Red Wedding was the last scene she shot before wrapping up work on Game of Thrones season 3.
