As HBO and showrunners plan the rest of their Game of Thrones series, a new report reveals that shorter seasons are being considered.

According to THR, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are “mulling two short-order final seasons.” One idea is to book a seven-episode season 7, and a six-episode season 8. To date, each season of Game of Thrones has had 10 episodes.

With rumors about episode counts already surfacing, our guess is an announcement about the final two seasons may be made around the time that Game of Thrones season 6 begins airing later this month.

However, HBO is denying the chatter. “Any conversations about the end of Game of Thrones and the number of episodes of future seasons is purely speculative,” said an HBO spokesperson. “As is customary, HBO will sit with Dan and David to discuss the details once a decision has been made to go forward with season seven.”

If the plan described above moves forward, it would be similar to what AMC did to wrap up Breaking Bad and Mad Men: The final season was split into two shorter seasons, spread out across two years. For a network like AMC, the two shorter seasons gave them extra time to springboard a new series off of their Bad and Men successes. Similarly, HBO would have two years to get Thrones viewers into another show. Since Thrones is their most popular drama, you can bet they’ll be looking for a way to keep subscribers on board.

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series will be seven books long by the time it’s finished, so this plan could align nicely with the eventual releases of The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Two more books, 23 more episodes (we’re including season 6).

How do you think ‘Game of Thrones’ should wrap things up?

It’s sad to be talking about the end…
