After a month of silence we finally get more casting news for Outlander!

Starz has announced that Tobias Menzies, recently known for his role as Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones, will be playing the dual roles of Frank Randall and Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall.

These two characters exist in different times and although they are relatives of one another, they are completely different people. Frank Randall is the twentieth century husband of Claire Randall, the main character of the series.

The story begins with the Randalls spending a second honeymoon together in the Highlands after being separated during World War II. During the war Claire worked as an army nurse while Frank worked for MI6.

Now on their honeymoon, Frank begins his previous profession as a historian studying the rising of the Jacobites of 1745 while researching his own ancestry. He begins to obsess over his most famous ancestor, Jonathan Wolverton Randall, a captain in charge of containing the rebellion in Scotland.

After Claire falls through the ancient standing stones, landing in 1743, she runs into her husband’s ancestor. Bearing a striking resemblance to Frank she mistakes Jack for her husband. She soon realizes her mistake as he introduces himself as a man she knows to have died nearly 200 years ago.

Frank spoke often to Claire of his ancestor who he believed to be a great man and war hero of the rebellion. Claire soon finds out that history isn’t always the truth and the man in front of her who bears the face of a man she loves dearly is anything but great.
