In a new video interview, Game of Thrones director David Nutter reflects on directing the pivotal season 3, episode 9, and what thoughts went into bringing the Red Wedding to screen.

Last Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones saw both Catelyn and Robb Stark perish at the tragic and traumatizing Red Wedding, one of the most iconic moments from the George R.R. Martin book series.

It was one of the moments fans had most been anticipating, and as such there was a lot of pressure on the writers, actors, and director to get it right.

The Huffington Post has done a lengthy video interview with David Nutter, director of the episode, where he reflects on adapting the scene from the book to the TV screen:

It’s worth watching the full 40-minute long interview, but some points worthy of note include that Martin approved of the final version of the Red Wedding, and that sadly Nutter will not be back for season 4 (although he implied involvement in the not yet confirmed fifth season.)

David Nutter has also directed the upcoming season 3 finale episode “Mhysa.”

In related news, Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey was recently on the Conan talk show to discuss recent events in the series, and of course shared her reaction to the Red Wedding:

Also on Conan recently was George R.R. Martin, who talked about his reasons for killing off main characters and watched fan reactions live!

Game of Thrones season 3, episode 10 “Mhysa” airs Sunday at 9/8c on HBO.
