David Benioff and DB Weiss, creators and show runners of HBO’s Game of Thrones, show off their lighter side in a new video about the show’s creation.

Many fans of HBO’s hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones may possess an understandable instinct to weep bitter tears upon seeing the show’s creators David Benioff and DB Weiss. After all, Game of Thrones is one of the most enthusiastically murderous television shows airing today, and when fans usually see Benioff and Weiss, they are often discussing the slaughter of one of your favorite characters.

But in a new featurette from HBO titled “Game of Thrones: Long Short Story”, Benioff and Weiss reveal a latent comedic side. The video, narrated by the intimidatingly scary Charles Dance (who plays the even more terrifying Tywin Lannister) relates Benioff and Weiss’s journey to creating the wildly popular Game of Thrones.

Hilariously edited and animated, set to a snappy classical soundtrack, “Game of Thrones: Long Story Short” takes fans through the show’s development. The tale moves from Benioff’s discovery of the brick-like A Song of Ice and Fire novels – “I thought, ‘There’s no way in hell I’m going to read it!'” he says – to the incredibly intricate and manpower-heavy process of episode production.

A vital element in the creator’s process? Hot sauce.

“I just like hot sauce,” Weiss shrugs.

Benioff and Weiss had to pass a tricky test before series author George RR Martin agreed to the show. “[Martin] said, ‘Who do you think is Jon Snow’s real mother?'” Benioff relates. “We threw out our guess… and then slowly he smiled, and then we were in.”

Unfortunately, the Game of Thrones creators stay mum on the answer to that hotly-debated question. But with Game of Thrones season 4 less than a month away, fans will soon have more material on which to speculate.

Game of Thrones season 4, episode 1, “Two Swords,” will air on April 6 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
