Gambit movie news has been tumultuous at best, and disheartening at worst, but there’s hope on the horizon.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit has been on and off the table so many times, it’s made the our heads spin. The last we heard, it was still happening, though there have been complications that have slowed down production.

Simon Kinberg, who has produced plenty of X-Men movies in his days and may be taking on directorial duties for X-Men: Supernova, has spoken out about Gambit’s current progress. I’ve heard so many back-and-forth comments lately that I’ve decided to stop reporting on this property until we finally have some promising news.

And it looks like promising news is here.

According to ComicBook.com, Gambit is still happening. “It’s in active development,” he said. “It’s a movie that we hope will be ready to go by the end of this year and shoot next year.”

Part of the reason why the film is taking so long to find its legs is because both the studio and Tatum want to make sure the movie is the best it can be. Kinberg cites Ryan Reynolds’ commitment to making Deadpool the right way, as well as Hugh Jackman’s commitment to the highly anticipated Logan, which hits theaters on March 3.

It looks Fox has finally learned its lesson: those flashy action movies are great for what they are, but if they really want to make waves, find a way to tell a story people can relate to. Yes, Deadpool and Logan are darker and more violent films, but those qualities makes them that much more meaningful.

The other bit of interesting news Kinberg shares? “[W]e want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise.”

That’s how much stock Fox is putting into Gambit and Channing Tatum. We could likely see more than one film about this character, and who knows what spinoff movies it may generate.
