Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is officially set to play Hedy Lamarr in Showtime’s upcoming biopic limited series about the famed actress and inventor.

Looks like DC’s Wonder Woman will be playing a real life wonder woman.

Showtime confirmed earlier today that Gal Gadot — famous for bringing one of the greatest fictional female superheroes to life on the big screen — will play real-life pioneer and trailblazer in both film and science, Hedy Lamarr.

Hedy Lamarr immigrated from Europe in the late 1930s and quickly became a star in Hollywood. “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World,” as she was called, acted alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood — Judy Garland, Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner and Jimmy Stewart, to name just a few.

And what did she do when she wasn’t dazzling audiences on the big screen? Why, she was off inventing new technology and patenting a frequency-hopping device — specifically a radio guidance system for allied torpedoes that utilized spectrum and frequency — which is what modern-day Bluetooth and WiFi is built upon.

Showtime’s Co-President of Entertainment Jana Winograde commented on the cast and crew, saying:

The life of Hedy Lamarr was a truly fascinating one. She stood at the forefront of many issues that challenge women and our society today. In Gal Gadot, we have found the transcendent actress to portray the deeply complex Lamarr. And with the award-winning talents of Sarah Treem and Warren Littlefield, this is going to be a special series.

In addition to starring in the currently untitled biopic, Gal Gadot will likewise executive produce alongside The Affair’s Sarah Treem — also the biopic’s writer.

Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo), Katie Robbins (The Last Tycoon) and Jaron Varsano (My Dearest Fidel) are also attached to produce.

No word yet on when the biopic will debut, though Showtime head Gary Levine stated that “the writers room is just gathering and just hired researchers this week.”
