FX’s The Americans continues to bring its characters to their breaking points as seen in the preview promo, stills and synopsis for its fifth episode “COMINT”.

Thus far on The Americans viewers have seen Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) struggle with the layers of truth and fiction in their relationship. They continue to move back and forth in terms of their feelings for one another. In “COMINT” it seems like Elizabeth will face a personal challenge and Philip will be there to protect her, whether she likes it or not, as seen in the promo.

The synopsis hints at how vulnerable Philip and Elizabeth are both personally and professionally in The Americans. “A crucial agent crumbles under emotional distress and threatens to topple a valuable network of KGB informants. Professionally, Philip and Elizabeth are tasked with infiltrating the FBI’s new communications encryption system while personally they are forced to grapple with one of the darker aspects of life as a spy.”

In other news, The Americans has been renewed for a second season after only airing four episodes on FX. The ratings for the show have varied however as the series premiere was the most-watched premiere of any FX series gathering 5.11 million viewers after factoring in DVR and other viewing methods. If you missed an episode or two, you still have time to catch up! On March 1 at 10 p.m. EST FX will be running a marathon of all of The Americans episodes so far.
