Disney’s Broadway adaptation of their animated hit Frozen will have a surprising number of new songs.
According to a new profile piece in The New York Times about Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez, the Frozen musical will have “about a dozen new songs” which the musical duo are writing.
No additional details were revealed in the piece, but if the new songs are anything like the tunes in the first film, the Frozen musical will leave you tapping your feet long after the curtain falls.
Perhaps some of these new songs will also appear in Frozen 2, which Disney confirmed earlier this year is already in development?
Speaking to when it’ll open on Broadway, Disney CEO Bob Iger previously stated that the studio is “not demanding speed, we’re demanding excellence.”
We may be waiting a while, but how long exactly? A rumor report earlier this year from a reliable Broadway source indicated it’ll be on the stage by 2017.
Obviously the musical will include Frozen hits like “Let It Go” and and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” but the songwriters may look to songs that hit the cutting room floor for inspiration when writing the new titles.
When asked by Broadway World earlier this year if they’d use Frozen outtakes for the musical, Lopez said, “I don’t think anything from the bottom drawer would really fit – those songs were all meant for moments that were eventually cut. But, never say never…”
Added Anderson Lopez said, “There’s always fabric there, though. In everything you do for these characters there are pieces and motifs and feels and tempos that you can say, ‘Oh, remember that one?’ about when you’re writing something new. We do recycle things, but they just aren’t always recognizably recycled.”
The Frozen short film Frozen Fever, which opened with Cinderella earlier this year, also included a new song. It is titled “Making Today a Perfect Day” and can be heard below:
