Recent comments from Frozen star Idina Menzel suggest what everyone already assumed: Frozen 2 is in the works at Disney.

When asked by The Telegraph in a recent interview whether or not she’d want to participate in the already-announced Frozen Broadway musical and a potential sequel, Menzel replied, “They’re all in the works,” before saying that she’s “hopeful” to have a role in the movie. “We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride.”

I saw this story on Friday when The Telegraph reported it, but I glossed over it because it didn’t seem like news.

Then the rest of the media world picked it up.

Maybe everyone is jumping on this story because it’s the slow holiday weekend, but I didn’t see it as a big deal. Besides the fact that Menzel’s comments are barely substantial, of course Disney is trying to put together Frozen 2. If they can wrangle together a compelling storyline worthy of the original, movie number two will happen.

In the meantime, they’ll be doing everything they can to keep the Frozen franchise fresh in our heads. In addition to things like the endless merchandise you’re seeing this holiday season and the big pushes at Disney Parks, the studio recently confirmed that a Frozen short film is arriving early next year. The story is set during Anna’s birthday.

As we pointed out in a recent feature looking at what’s next on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ slate, the animated arm of the Mouse House has opted to not release a theatrical sequel in quite some time.

That may change when it comes to Frozen, given its enormous success. It’s the #1 highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Like with Toy Story 4, Disney will wait until they have a story worthy of the screen.

In the meantime we’ll be dealing with the endless “Frozen 2 is happening!!” articles every time someone associated with the franchise opens their mouth and utters “sequel.”
