Fringe‘s Anna Torv talks in a new interview about how Olivia is coping with being reunited with her estranged husband and grown-up daughter in season 5.

TV Line has spoken to Torv about Olivia’s feelings about Peter and Etta. In the season premiere episode “Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11,” Olivia was freed from the amber only to find Etta a grown woman, and still struggling with her and Peter’s history (as they separated before the ambering back in 2015 following the loss of their daughter).

Although Peter and Olivia did begin to mend the break in the first episode, there’s still “a whole bunch of stuff” to sort out, which “runs a lot deeper than that,” she says. “So it sort of has to come up again – all amongst saving the world!”

She also hints at more surprises in store for fans as the puzzle pieces are filled in about what happened in 2015. “It’s a complicated situation, because again, we don’t know yet what all happened before ambering ourselves,” Torv says.

On the rest of this fifth and final season, Torv says that we can expect, “A lof of callbacks, throwbacks to cases, throwbacks to people.” And while they have only filmed six out of the 13 episodes, Torv shares her belief that while there will be “some prices to pay,” some kind of happy ending is in store. “In film, you can have sad endings – like, ‘Oh well, it could’ve been’ – but with television you put so much time into these people, that when you do finally say goodbye, you should be satisfied,” Torv says. “Not necessarily happy, but not heartbroken.”

Fringe returns tonight at 9/8c on Fox with the second episode of the season, “In Absentia.” Walter is attempting to regain his memories, but will he be successful?

“I would think there’s hope,” Torv says. “That is what our show kind of holds onto, that there’s always hope.”
