Friends and Netflix have parted ways, so fans will have to rely on TV reruns or their own DVDs until HBO Max makes it grand premiere.

If you were hoping to start off your new year with a Friends binge, then 2020 started off as quite a disappointment.

January 1 marked the end of the Netflix and Friends relationship, meaning that fans were without any streaming options to watch Friends — a reality that will be true over the next few months. Fans will have to turn to their own DVD collections or purchase episodes and complete seasons on places like Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play and Vudu.

Fans can also catch Friends reruns on TBS or Nick at Nite.

Those without Friends DVDs, linear television access or who don’t want to buy the show will have to wait until the debut of streamer HBO Max sometime in May, as it is the official new streaming home to the show.

Netflix has been the streaming home of Friends for the last five years. Netflix won the license for the show in late 2014 for $30 million a year, with all 236 episodes becoming available on Netflix starting January 1, 2015.

Along with its original fans, generations who were too young to watch the show in its original 1994 to 2004 run fell in love with all the Friendspropelling the show to become the second most-streamed show on Netflix in 2018, according to Nielsen, with users watching 32.6 million minutes of the show during the year.

Warner Bros. extended their deal with Netflix to the tune of $80 million to keep Friends on the streaming site through 2019. However, as WarnerMedia will have their own streaming service in 2020, it only makes sense that Friends would leave Netflix for HBO Max.

While HBO Max has yet to announce an exact launch date for its $15-per-month streamer, we do know that Friends will be available right at launch.
