There’s been a big trend in television development recently: What’s old is new again!

Such is the case today. TV Line has learned that a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot is in the works with Will Smith producing.

“Smith’s production shingle, Overbrook Entertainment, is in the very early stages of developing a present-day Fresh Prince reboot that puts a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of the original series,” the report states.

A pitch for the Fresh Prince reboot is still being planned, but producers hope to take it around to networks in the coming weeks.

Who may pick this up? We know that Netflix is currently shooting a Full House spinoff titled Fuller House, so we’re sure they’d be interesting in hearing about this new Fresh Prince show.

NBC would also be wise to take a look at the pitch — they were the people who ran the original series from 1990 – 1996.

The networks will probably be heavily interested in this if Will Smith agrees to star in the new series. Perhaps his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith would also be interested in a role? She starred in season 1 of Fox’s Gotham but isn’t returning for season 2. And as we learned recently, their relationship is the strongest its ever been.

Fresh Prince was one of the best television series of the ’90s, thanks in part to its insanely catchy theme song:

Would you tune in to a ‘Fresh Prince’ spinoff set in present day?

We should all celebrate (or mourn) the news by performing the theme song at karaoke this weekend.
