We all have many questions that need answers leading up to the season 2 premiere of How to Get Away With Murder, and most of them involve Annalise’s right hand man: Frank Delfino.

We’re hoping season 2 will give us a better picture of who he is and what his motives are, but for now all we can do is speculate with the little information that we have. Here’s what we need to know (and a little bit of what we do know):

1. What is Frank’s job?

The closest we can come to answering this one is to say Professional Criminal. While Frank is always around in the court room with Annalise and it was once mentioned that it is his job to get all relevant information from the clients regarding the case, the only time we ever really see Frank act is when something less than legal needs to be done for Annalise or in one case, Sam. For example:

Frank once scolded Laurel for insinuating that he was “some sort of hitman,” however these last two items make it seem like that might be exactly the case. Not to mention he is a prime suspect for Rebecca’s killer. These combined with the fact that Frank has a connection at the prison where Nate was being held definitely suggests that he has some sort of criminal background or potentially someone in his family had a criminal background and Frank learned his stealth ways from this.

2. How did Frank begin working for Annalise?

All we know here is that Bonnie has said that Annalise thinks of Frank “as family” and that Frank apparently owed something to Sam which was paid off with Lila’s murder, presumably unbeknownst to Annalise. We also know that he is extremely loyal to Annalise even in extreme circumstances. Best guess here is that Annalise and/or Sam got Frank out of some sort of criminal situation and that’s why he is so loyal. They may have done this because they had some family/friend connection to Frank at the time. This would mean Frank also owes a debt to Annalise which could be one reason why she trusts him so completely.

3. Who has Frank’s heart (if he has one)?

Frank’s pursuit of Laurel Castillo and their tumultuous relationship is a highlight of the show for many fans. We are lead to believe that his initial pursuit of Laurel is just part of his pattern of seducing students, however their relationship seems to blossom when Laurel finally gives in to her feelings for him… that is until we find out he has a girlfriend. Presumably his feelings for Laurel are genuine as he calls her the night of Sam’s murder begging for forgiveness and claiming he would do anything for her, which he backs up by helping her cover up “her theft” of the trophy.

There are many more cute moments between these two post Sam’s murder that backs up the fact that Frank has true feelings for Laurel but you do have to wonder: can someone who can commit murder so non-chalantly really have the capacity to care about somebody like that? Does he enjoy committing crimes or does he truly believe that he is doing the right thing while doing these things for Annalise and Sam?

The only thing we know for sure is that this is an incredibly complex character. His motives regarding how he interacts with women, how he conducts his job, and his loyalties are still unknown but will no doubt be a key part of How to Get Away with Murder season 2!
