Snow White and the Huntsman 2 may have found its new director in Frank Darabont, but surprising news lies in the involvement of Kristen Stewart.

According to The Wrap, Frank Darabont is in talks to direct Snow White and the Huntsman 2. His pitch reportedly made him Universal’s top candidate for the anticipated sequel, beating out Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) and Andy Muschietti (Mama).

Darabont is most known recently for being the Walking Dead season 1 showrunner, ushering in one of the most popular TV shows to ever air. Darabont’s career of course spans past cable TV zombies as he has directed some big movies as well. The director’s most famous movie is of course the seven Oscar nominated The Shawshank Redemption, one of the greatest movies of all time. Darabont also directed another great Stephen King adaptation, the Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan starred The Green Mile, nominated for four Oscars.

Besides those projects, Darabont’s career hasn’t been as strong as we would have hoped. Some of his projects haven’t been as strong as those, and his latest TV series Mob City was cancelled after only one season.

The other revelatory part of this report is that the movie will not star Kristen Stewart as the titular Snow White, though she could appear in a cameo. As was rumored around the release of the first movie, Snow White and the Huntsman 2 will reportedly center around the other titular character, Thor and Avengers star Chris Hemsworth’s the Huntsman.

The surprising part is here that about a year ago, Universal confirmed that Stewart would return for the sequel. This report goes against Universal’s confirmation, but of course plans can change over time. It’s possible that Darabont’s pitch changed things.

Do you think Frank Darabont is a good director choice for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman 2’? Should the movie go on without Kristen Stewart?
