After a summer filled with loud franchise pictures that mostly crashed and burned, it was the smaller, independent movies that survived the season and lingered in moviegoer’s memories. One of these modest gems is Frances Ha, released toward the end of May and still playing in a handful of theatres.

Directed by Noah Baumbach (Greenberg, The Squid and the Whale) and shot in black and white, the film focuses on the misadventures of a young twenty-something in New York City. She is played by Greta Gerwig who also co-wrote the film with Baumbach.

The Criterion Collection recently announced that Frances Ha would be joining their DVD and Blu-Ray lineup on November 12th but the news has been rumored for months. I interviewed Baumbach back in May when he was in San Francisco promoting Frances Ha and spoke to him about the Criterion rumors. Here is what he had to say at the time but even more interesting is what he also hints at down the road.

Q: It was recently mentioned that your film would be joining the Criterion Collection sometime soon. With something like that, do you focus on putting together special features while the film is being released or do you deal with that after everything is said and done?

Noah Baumbach: It depends on the release date but in this case since the DVD is going to come out before the end of the year, we are just starting to think about what those would be.

Q: What kinds of things would you like to include in the package?

Baumbach: I’ve never liked doing commentary so I won’t do that but we’ll see. I’m just figuring it out.

Q: Have you looked into getting a Blu-Ray upgrade for Kicking and Screaming which is already in the collection?

Baumbach: Yes and I want that to happen but we also have to get Squid and the Whale in there too. I really want that one in there.

Frances Ha will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray November 12.
