The Television Critics Association 2018 press tour kicked off today with Fox! Here’s a roundup on all the news about The Gifted, Prison Break, New Girl, Disney’s acquisition and more!

‘The Gifted’ renewed for season 2:

The Gifted will be airing its season 1 finale on January 15 8 p.m. ET on Fox. The series has already been renewed for a second season. The series is currently ranking at the number 3 drama of the 2017-2018 season. With an average rating of 2.0/7 in Live + 7 ratings, which is an increase of 18% in the time slot from last year.

The Gifted averages 8.3 Million Total Viewers across platforms, with a +146% increase from its Live + same day delivery.

‘Prison Break’ will return for season 6:

Although it initially looked like Prison Break was only returning for another season, Fox has other ideas now. The Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn announced that they are working on a “new iteration of Prison Break,” and added that it’s still in the early stages of being developed.

Entertainment Weekly asked Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman for more information who stated, “No, it would not be an entirely new cast.”

Adding, “It’s very early at this stage. Paul Scheuring had an idea for another season, and he came and pitched it to Michael and the team. They were excited about it, but it’s super early. We haven’t seen any written materials at all.”

‘New Girl’ season 7 will premiere April 10:

The seventh and final season of New Girl will premiere Tuesday, April 10 at 9:30 p.m. ET on Fox! The final season will be comprised of eight episodes and will have a special one-hour finale on Tuesday, May 15 at 9 p.m. ET.

When the series returns there will be a three-year time jump. Jess and Nick are still together and have just returned from a whirlwind European book tour. Schmidt has become a stay-at-home dad to raise daughter Ruth, Cece is a working mom and continuing her career as a modeleing agent. Winston and Aly are also married with a child on the way.

The final season will see the return of guest stars Nasim Pedrad, Damon Wayans, Jr., Dermot Mulroney, David Walton, Nelson Franklin, Sam Richardson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner. While also introducing JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Tig Notaro (One Mississippi).

A fun tidbit revealed was that a game of True American will be included in the final season.

Disney/Fox deal:

Dana Walden and Gary Newman had a lot of explaining to do about how the network will be affected by the deal with Disney. The major deal has Disney buying 21st Century Fox’s film and TV studio, the FX channel, and the National Geographic channel.

But the Fox Broadcasting network, Fox News Channel, and other smaller Fox stations were left out of the deal. Still, it could be a year or more until the whole thing is completed. Until then, they plan on continuing to operate in the same fashion as they always have according to TV Line. With plans to order a similar amount of pilots in the upcoming season.

Once that deal is done, however, the network plans to create what they call “a very robust and nimble company” titled New Fox. They estimate that about 80% of the programming will be live and sports related on New Fox. The remaining entertainment programming could come from outside studios.

Ryan Murphy on ‘American Horror Story’:

Though Ryan Murphy was at the TCA’s to discuss his new show 9-1-1, the showrunner also discussed how the Disney merger will affect his other shows. According to The Wrap, Murphy spoke about his production company at Fox, saying, “He’s going to wait and see how it all shakes out first.”

Apparently, Murphy got a call from Disney boss Bob Iger that gave him a bit of hope. “I got a call from Mr. Iger, and I said point-blank that what I do is not specifically Disney, and I’m not interested in that and I’m concerned about that,” Murphy said. It seems the talk went well and Murphy was assured by Iger that Disney believes in the properties they’re acquiring from Fox.

When talking about 9-1-1, Murphy also revealed that the show was inspired by a real life event he had with his son!
