Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly spoke today at the Television Critics Association about the decision to end Fringe and whether the network plans on introducing more genre shows.

HitFix reports that Reilly expressed the hope that Fox’s decision to keep Fringe on the air for a final 13 episodes would satisfy fans of the show who are sad to see it end. He said:

Look, I don’t like to pull the plug on any show, because many of our failed shows, most of them, have many many million fans. I’m hoping this puts to bed some of our Ghost of Comic-Con, as it were, which is, ‘Argh, damn you, FOX! You put these shows on and then break our hearts!’ I think, at least hopefully, we’ve got a little bit of cred for seeing [it] through.

He also comments on Fox’s history with genre shows (science fiction), which has included the criticized cancellations of Firefly and Dollhouse, saying:

We have a checked history with genre at best, because we’re one of the only networks that have tried genre. I’m hoping this puts to bed some of our Ghost of Comic-Con, as it were.

While they decided not to “dip into” any sci-fi shows season, Reilly did point out that The Following might be of interest to genre fans.
