With ABC resurrecting American Idol, Fox is set to be working on a brand new singing competition.

Variety has learned exclusively that Fox is developing a brand new singing competition from Israeli producer and distributor Armoza Formats, the production house behind Revenge of the Geeks, The Final Four, The People’s Choice and many other competition series.

The singing competition is described as, “a variation on classic shiny-floor singing competitions, one in which the show’s four finalists are selected in the premiere episode. New contestants then challenge the finalists each week to steal one of the four slots. The winner is named in the season finale.”

This sounds somewhat akin to what happens during the first round of The X-Factor live shows, in which only a handful of chairs are available for each judge’s category, and even singers who have obtained a chair can lose it if someone later delivers a better performance.

Fox chose to end American Idol last year after a 15-season run following a ratings decline. But with ABC picking it back up (with Katy Perry on the judging team and Ryan Seacrest possibly back to host), and NBC barreling on with The Voice, clearly Fox is struggling to hold on to its singing competition viewership.

American Idol has churned out some of America’s biggest chart hitters including Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson, both of whom will be serving as coaches on the upcoming season of The Voice.
