Fox’s next visit to the 24 franchise could find them turning the focus back to Jack Bauer.

Fans of 24 may have bid farewell to the original iteration of the series back in 2010, but the brand hasn’t stayed away from the small screen for long.

Over the years, Fox has revived the hit series twice: in 2014 the network premiered 24: Live Another Day (which found Kiefer Sutherland reprising his infamous role as Jack Bauer). They followed things up with 2017’s 24: Legacy, which focused on new character Eric Carter (Straight Outta Compton’s Corey Hawkins), a military hero who teams up with the CTU to stop an impending terror attack set to take place on American soil.

Now Fox is looking to return to the world of 24, this time turning the focus on a young Jack Bauer.

The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter who revealed on Monday (July 30) that an unnamed source close to the project has revealed that “the next installment of the 24 franchise will be an ongoing prequel series.”

The new show would be a Jack Bauer origin story, focusing on how the famed CTU member came to be the man we met in the original iteration of the show which first premiered back in 2001.

Behind the scenes, it’s being reported that original series creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran would both be retuning to co-write the script. The plan would be to flesh out the origin story in to a full blown series, rather than make it into a limited series as they did with Legacy.

There’s no word yet on who might be tapped to play a young Sutherland, or when the network plans to premiere the prequel.

News that Fox is looking to continue the franchise might not come as much of a surprise to fans of the show who’ve been keeping an eye on the news.

In fact, earlier this year at Fox’s 2018 Summer Upfronts presentation network chairman Dana Walden revealed that showrunners Surnow and Cochran were in the process of brainstorming ideas with regards to how to keep the franchise going.

Given the news coming out of THR today, it looks like Surnow and Cochran may have just settled on an idea that’s stuck.
