Camelot is coming to Fox and it pretty much does what it says on the tin, except it’ll be set in modern times with modern characters.

You know the story of King Arthur, legendary warrior and leader of the Knights of the Round Table. His story has been told time and time again, keeping it alive for a new generation. The BBC recently did it to great acclaim with Merlin, and now Fox is staking a claim.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Camelot will show a different side of the well-known hero.

The pitch reads, “When an ancient magic reawakens in modern-day Manhattan, a graffiti artist named Art must team with his best friend Lance and his ex, Gwen — an idealistic cop — in order to realize his destiny and fight back against the evil forces that threaten the city.”

Dan Frey and Ru Sommer (Saint Patrick) created the project and will pen the script as well as executive produce. Gail Berman and Joe Earley from The Jackal Group will develop the property for Fox.

Earley has worked with Fox for quite a period of time, and The Jackal Group has two other projects in the works with the network right now, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show reboot and Mattress World.

This may seem like an unwelcome twist on a classic tale, but Fox has a record of producing solid procedural shows. Most recently, they’ve released Lucifer, adapted from comic book source material, and turned it into a supernatural procedural to moderate success.

Perhaps Camelot will be taking a leaf out of the Devil’s book. Besides, it’ll be interesting to see which characters other than Lancelot and Gwen show up (yeah, you know who we’re talking about) and how they’re adapted to modern times.

Besides, it can’t be any worse than when Once Upon a Time made him evil, right?
