In recent (and rather shocking) news, the FFA (Florida Family Association) has spoken out against ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, claiming that most of the show’s characters are lesbians and that this sends out the wrong message to young girls.

We’re particularly confused as to how they’ve reached the thought that all of the main characters are lesbians, when we all know that only one of the show’s leading ladies is a lesbian.

The FFA has reportedly said:

“Unlike any other show on unrestricted advertiser supported television networks, the majority of the primary cast on Pretty Little Liars are lesbians… The series has grown from one lesbian lead character to three.”

They went on to discuss the bad image they believe the show is sending:

“ABC using salacious and glamorizing scenes portraying young, pretty women as lesbians sends the wrong message to these young girls, a message that reinforces and legitimizes this homosexual lifestyle in a manner that could affect these young girls’ sexual identity for a lifetime.”

Needless to say, this attack on the show seems to be brought about by blatant homophobia. After all, although Emily Fields is a primary cast member and a lesbian who has had a few flings, her past girlfriends do not meet the criteria of being ‘major’ cast members in the slightest. Not to mention that the portrayal of her character shows young girls that it is okay to be yourself, whether you are straight or gay, and this is a message that should be embraced rather than feared.
