NBC’s Emerald City has been in the works for years, and now we finally have a trailer!

Emerald City is one of NBC’s most anticipated new series, premiering Friday, January 6 2017.

Starring Adria Arjona, Vincent D’Onofrio, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ana Ularu, Mido Hamada, Jordan Loughran, Gerran Howell and Joely Richardson, the series follows the 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Arjona), who is swept up into a world of evil, dangerous warriors battling for supremacy within a terrifying, much darker version of Oz.

With just under two months to go until the premiere, here’s the first trailer for the series:

Poor Dorothy is swept up into the storm, only to knock down the Witch of the East, instantly assuring mass unpopularity in the magical realm. She must now follow the yellow brick road to see the Wizard, whom she hopes will take her home.

Emerald City, pitched as a dark, edgier version of The Wizard of Oz, was created by Matthew Arnold back in 2014, originally set to premiere in 2015 with The Sarah Connor Chronicles‘ Josh Friedman serving as showrunner.

But Friedman left the project due to creative differences with the network, and the project was put on hold. NBC eventually brought David Schulner (Dracula, The Event) on to helm the series, with Tarsem Singh directing all 10 episodes of the first season. Friedman is still credited as executive producer alongside Shaun Cassidy.

It’s great to see NBC getting into the high fantasy game, in what looks like a worthy competitor for MTV’s Shannara Chronicles, and a step above ABC’s Once Upon a Time. The new Dorothy looks fantastic, and all in all, Emerald City looks like it really brings the magic back to this imaginative universe following the abysmal Oz the Great and Powerful.
