FX released the first trailer for American Horror Story: Apocalypse, and as we’ve come to expect with AHS teasers, it’s delightfully creepy.

The American Horror Story franchise does a lot of things well, but one of the absolute best parts about the lead-up to a new season is the influx of unsettling, creepy, and often confusing teasers that we get as the premiere date gets closer. With the September premiere of American Horror Story: Apocalypse inching ever closer, FX has finally released a teaser for the brand new season, and it is utterly fantastic.

True to form, this trailer just gives us a lot of atmospheric clues about what to expect in the upcoming season. Of course, because we know this season is a crossover season between Murder House and Coven, it’s a bit easier to place some of the references than in previous seasons, but there are still a lot of questions we need answered.

First, the trailer begins with what looks like a shot of a fetus in utero, which we can only assume is a reference to Michael Langdon, the child born when Tate (aka the Rubber Man) raped Constance Langdon. We know that Michael will have a much larger part to play in Apocalypse and that we will also get to see Michael as a grown man, but we don’t know how he’s grown from a (lowkey murderous) baby into an adult. Judging by the amount of death shown in the teaser, we’re going to bet he’s definitely got a significant evil streak in him.

And while the trailer has a few things that instantly make us think of Coven, especially the image of the grate with a pentagram in it, the general tone of the teaser feels a lot more like the teasers we saw leading up to Murder House rather than the teasers for Coven. It’s not clear if that is a testament to how much the characters from Coven will be in Apocalypse, or if future teasers will infuse imagery from Coven. Either way, we can’t wait to see more from this new season!

American Horror Story: Coven premieres on FX on September 12.
