John Goodman has some choice words for Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler red-band trailer.

The Gambler stars Wahlberg as an English professor who also likes to dabble in high-stakes gambling, which is obviously why he’s getting a stern warning from John Goodman’s character, who is lending him some money in the film’s new red-band trailer.

The film features Jim Bennett who is a risk taker. He’s an English professor that bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral.

Jim is always one step ahead, and decides to leave his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future.

Wahlberg’s character ends up in a relationship with a student, played by Brie Larson, and he finds himself in a sticky situation where he has to risk it all to have a second chance.

This new trailer for The Gambler looks interesting, especially the amount of talented actors that include Jessica Lange, John Goodman, Wahlberg, and Brie Larson. It’s a remake of an original film of the same name, which was released in 1974.

The Gambler will be released in select theaters on December 19, and will have its wide release on January 2, 2015.
