Marvel has released our first look at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, featuring Brian Patrick Wade as Crusher Creel.

The first official image from the premiere episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 was released by Marvel.com today. The image offers a hint at the storyline of the as-yet-untitled premiere, though it leaves us guessing as to the whereabouts of Director Coulson and his crew.

The still shot shows actor Brian Patrick Wade (Teen Wolf) in the role of Carl “Crusher” Creel. In the comics sphere, Creel boasts the hilarious terrifying nickname “the Absorbing Man,” due to his ability to take on the characteristics of anything he touches. It seems evident that Creel does not use those powers for anything good.

(Which is a shame, because we’d be totally into a guy who absorbed the properties of chocolate.)

Marvel leaves most of the details of Crusher Creel’s appearance to our imaginations, but the announcement does note that the Absorbing Man will “put Coulson and his team through their paces.”

We hazard a guess that Creel is among the escapees from the Fridge, the S.H.I.E.L.D. prison that was breached last season by HYDRA agents Grant Ward and John “Not So Clairvoyant” Garrett.

It seems likely that Creel will serve as a fairly standard villain of the week in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 premiere, but the upcoming season will certainly not suffer from a shortage of bad guys. Reed Diamond will be playing Daniel Whitehall, a HYDRA honcho known as the “Kraken” in the comics universe; Simon Kassiandes, cast as Bakshi, appears to be sharing scenes with Diamond.

Twin Peaks‘ Kyle MacLaclan is also joining up as Skye’s father, and though we have no confirmation, we suspect that means he leans toward the dark as well.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 tops off their cast with several notable ladies as well. Yesterday, Adrianne Palicki was announced as comics favorite Bobbi Morse, while Lucy Lawless’ casting as Agent Isabelle Hartley has been a point of excitement since July.

ABC and Marvel have remained coy on the subject of Coulson and his team, but with filming properly underway, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before secrets start slipping free.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will premiere on September 23, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
