There’s an awesome fan-made trailer for an imagined animated Firefly series that you must watch, so we can all cry about the fact that it isn’t real.

Animator Stephen Byrne, who previously brought us an imagine-trailer for The Animated Adventures of Buffy, has done it again.

This time it’s the Firefly/Serenity fandom’s turn to drool, over this amazing trailer for what could be the best animated series of all time:

The teaser sets the would-be Animated Adventures of Firefly after the events of Serenity, as evidenced by one particularly heart-wrenching scene (I’m not a leaf on the wind you are, shut up).

Of course there already is a canonical continuation of Mal Reynolds’ crew’s adventures, albeit in comic book form. But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t love an animated series, especially if it brought back some of the original voice actors.

Maybe when Joss Whedon is done with his mystery movie, his female Victorian-era Batman comic and the SuperFlarrow musical episode he may or may not be directing, he’ll take a look at this incredible trailer and let himself be inspired! A Browncoat can dream, right?

For what it’s worth, in 2013 Joss Whedon told ComingSoon the following about a potential Firefly return:

“There’s a real fear of ‘The Monkey’s Paw,’ you know? You bring it back to life and it isn’t the same. Even if it’s GREAT and it isn’t the same. I’m dying to get on a ship with those guys again, but I’m also doing yet another goddamn huge ensemble movie. Why can’t I do a movie about just one guy? So right now I can’t even access that part of my brain. If all the planets align that would be great, but I’m not going to do what I did the first time and move heaven and earth to make it happen.”
