In July it was revealed that Pixar was developing a sequel to Finding Nemo, and now we have confirmation from the director himself.

Director Andrew Stanton confirmed the news in passing while addressing his recent Disney flop John Carter. He insisted that he’s not falling back on an inevitably-successful Pixar sequel in order to rekindle his credit as a director. “What was immediately on the list was writing a second ‘Carter’ movie,’ Stanton said to the Los Angeles Times. “When that went away, everything slid up. I know I’ll be accused by more sarcastic people that [‘Nemo 2’]‘s a reaction to ‘Carter’ not doing well, but only in its timing, but not in its conceit.”

As of last month we heard that Ellen DeGeneres was in talks to reprise her role as Dory. With a full slate of films already set for the next few years, you could expect Finding Nemo 2 to be released in 2016 at the earliest.

If you can’t get enough of Pixar’s classic fish tale, you can currently check out Finding Nemo 3D in theaters across the country.

The studio’s next release will be Monsters University on June 20, 2013. It is a prequel to Monsters, Inc. and follows Mike and Sulley during their time as college students. Watch the Monsters University trailer.
