Disney and Pixar have released a new trailer for Finding Dory, the highly-anticipated Finding Nemo sequel which is set to hit theaters next month.

The new Finding Dory trailer offers some great footage from the movie, including the voice of Baby Dory (You’ll have to wait until the movie’s out to see Baby Dory in the flesh). The preview shows Nemo, Marlin, and Dory heading towards California’s Marine Life Institute, where the forgetful fish expects to find her parents.

The movie looks like a lot of fun, and those sea lions may be the Mine!Mine!Mine! Seagulls of the movie. But there’s something else worth mentioning too: The new trailer might depict Pixar’s very first gay or lesbian couple. I’m talking about these two women, who help a child pick up a sippy cup with Dory in it just before her new friend Hank hides under the baby blanket (This scene appears just after the 1-minute mark in the above trailer):

Can we say for sure that this is a lesbian couple? No — it could be two female friends who decide to go to the aquarium together for any number of reasons. Will a fuss be made about a lesbian in the movie? Probably not, as they appear to be two characters who appear only briefly while Dory and Hank are on a mission. But the idea of these two being lesbians has picked up traction since a Disney fan on Twitter (who I know, and who is awesome, and who you should follow if you like Disney) proposed it Tuesday morning:

I’m going to call them Abigail and Laura. I hope that Abigail and Laura are lesbians who are enjoying a date night at the local aquarium. These two love each other very much, and needless to say, finding a octopus baby holding a sippy cup with a fish in it will definitely be brought up at their next book club meeting.

At a time when we’re all looking to Disney to introduce more LGBT characters, a subtle introduction like this one would be great to see. It’s just enough — for now — to tell us that they intend on representing a big group of the world’s population. It’d also be a nice nod to Dory voice actress Ellen DeGeneres, who is openly gay.

We all know that Pixar is all about the details in their work, so we’re sure when they were creating these two characters they decided if they’re lesbians or not. If they didn’t, they should pretend that that was totally their intention. Why not? It probably has no affect on the story and it’ll make a lot of people happy.
