Even though it has been stated that Final Fantasy Versus XIII would be a PlayStation 3 exclusive, word from trusted sources has stated that the game is being picked up on a next-gen console, and under a different title.

When fans of the Final Fantasy franchise heard of Versus XIII back in 2006, many were confused what its correlation with XIII would be. However, it was confirmed that the game will take place in the same universe as Lightning’s, but that it would not be considered a sequel.

A trailer was soon released that wowed fans for its amazing graphics and distinct Kingdom Hearts feel. The notable likeness between the two games is merited, in that the Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura is also in charge of XIII and Versus XIII. Versus XIII was to be a real-time action game with a battle system akin to Kingdom Hearts‘.

You can watch that mind blowing trailer below.

Unfortunately, after getting everyone excited to see this new protagonist Noctis battle off against enemies in a realistic, yet still Kingdom Hearts-y style, reports were coming in that the game was cancelled in a quiet and slow manner.

Thankfully, Square Enix’s CEO followed up in early 2011 that Versus XIII was not cancelled. And then, there was nothing said about the game. That is, up until now.

Entertainment website IGN.com is citing a source they trust that states that Versus XIII will no longer be for the PlayStation 3, but will be changed over to be played on the next PlayStation console in 2014.

This is good news for anyone who’s a fan of Nomura’s work, especially in that he stated explicitly that he would not advance on to creating Kingdom Hearts 3 until Versus XIII is completed.

Lastly, IGN’s source stated that Versus XIII will soon be known under another name, which is yet to be announced.

Are you excited to play Nomura’s first-person Kingdom Hearts-esque game? Or are you tired of the man’s constantly changing ideas and teasing?
